Ontario Bee Association summer meeting

Join fellow beekeepers at the Centre for Urban Ecology in the beautiful Humber Arboretum for an exciting summer beekeeping event featuring honeybee researcher and author Tom Seeley!

Hosted jointly by the Urban Toronto Beekeepers’ Association and the Toronto District Beekeepers’ Association, on behalf of the Ontario Beekeepers' Association (OBA), this summer meeting will be held on Saturday June 22, 2019.

Keynote speaker is Thomas Dyer Seeley, an outstanding researcher into the behavior and social life of honey bees, and author of several important books about bees, including The Lives of Bees, just released.

There will also be knowledgeable bee researchers from around Ontario and practical workshops on topics including products from the hive and marketing and labelling your honey. A visit to an apiary in the meadows of the Arboretum is included! There will also be a queen auction in support of the OBA Tech Transfer program.

9:00 – 9:15 a.m. Welcome – André Flys, OBA President. Introduction of Hosts, Sponsors and Exhibitors, Review of Day’s Agenda

9:15 – 10:15 a.m. Keynote Speech by Thomas Seeley, Cornell University, based on his new book The Lives of Bees: The Untold Story of the Honeybee in the Wild, describing his research on wild bees in the Arnot Forest and lessons this research suggests for beekeepers.

10:15 – 10:30 a.m. Break, Coffee and Snacks

10:30 – 11:00 a.m. Nadia Tsvetkov, York University – Honeybee research at the Amro Zayed Laboratory including impacts of neonics on bees and the BeeOmics Project (genetic selection of Ontario queens for hygienic behavior, overwintering, honey production & gentleness)

11:00 – 11:30 a.m. Nuria Morfin, University of Guelph – Impact of stressors on honeybee hygienic and grooming behavior

11:30 – 12:15 p.m. Kelsey Ducsharm, OBA Tech Transfer – The small hive beetle and what to do about it (now that it is spreading in Ontario)

12:15 – 1:30 p.m. Lunch (included in the ticket price); Sponsor Exhibits; Visits to Humber Arboretum Apiary

1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Products of the Hive – A series of short talks and demos by a variety of presenters on working with beeswax including: methods for rendering wax, using your beeswax to coat plastic foundation, making beeswax food wraps, and using beeswax in personal care products

3:00 – 3:15 p.m. Break

3:15 – 4:00 p.m. Andre Flys, Pioneer Honey Creating Attractive Labels and Marketing Honey for Small Producers

4:00 – 4:30 p.m. Wrap-up, including commentary by Thomas Seeley
